It took me a long while to figure out that it was the static IP address that was causing it. FTP over the LAN worked fine-but what's the point of that? A short while later, I found that I could not access the FTP service from outside the LAN. Someone recommended that I set the Freenas NIC for a static IP. I setup the port forwarding on the NEtgear, and it worked for a while. I have a Netgear router connected to Comcast Cable. This problem may not be SPECIFIC to Freenas, and really it's not even Freenas' problem. I'm so excited that I finally fixed this (though it may seem minor) I had to share this in case anyone else has the same problem.
